![]() ![]() But Apple was the only one to change this at the time, so if an iPhone user texted someone using an Android phone, the cute toy would have a very different meaning. Back in 2016, Apple changed their version of ‘pistol’ to be a water pistol, rather than a revolver. Apple has their emoji font, Google has theirs, and they generally line up, but in some cases, the differences are really important. “Say someone with an iPhone is texting someone with a Google Pixel. Notes Bramhill, this also introduces new kinds of confusion, as was the case of Barlow v. Axtell’s book Gestures: The Do’s and Taboos of Body Language Around the World, Russia, Australia, Iran, Greece, and Sardinia interpret the thumbs up symbol to mean “up yours.”Įmojis aren’t just a shorthand they afford us the ability to convey tone, emotion, even playfulness while also providing a clarity and reassurance to text that might otherwise be read as ambiguous. “If Gay thought that Barlow was mad at her when she got the text, opening the message assuming it would be passive-aggressive, I totally understand how Gay might feel offended by ‘□□.’ In the same way someone can sarcastically say ‘great job’ when you’ve just spilled red wine on a white couch, emoji can be used insincerely-and that’s really hard to be sure about.” Bramhill also recognizes the ways in which gestures can have different meanings across cultures. Bramhill, who has never seen a single episode of any Real Housewives (couldn’t be me □), has never heard of the single or double thumbs up being used as a fuck you, but he doesn’t dismiss the interpretation. Mark Bramhill, a podcast producer and host of Welcome to Macintosh, has devoted multiple episodes to uncovering where emojis come from, how they are designed, and how they come to have meaning. I also call up an emoji expert to weigh in. * Very Wendy Willams voice* she’s got a point. I think we should be talking about the characters of the emoji alphabet, what they really mean, and how they are used as weapons against us.” It’s become a language, and with every language, there’s double entendres, there’s nuances. “Where is the fun in that? I want to have a rainbow of communicative nuances and subtitles with my emojis. When I point to the existence of the middle finger emoji, she breezily shrugs it off. Okay, but what about the double emoji thumbs up? Is there a universality of understanding among ex-Mormons, Salt Lakers, and Real Housewives that my brain is not privy to? “In my heart and mind, and amongst my friends, there was a universal text code that if you sent two thumbs up, it was F and U, but a nonaggressive way of doing it versus an exclamation point on a message,” explains Gay. I think we should be talking about the characters of the emoji alphabet, what they really mean, and how they are used as weapons against us. Fuck you, ”- a reference to a text exchange between the two that ended with Gay sending a pair of thumbs up emojis, which, according to an insulted Barlow, is “universal text code” for fuck you. And until you figure out what it is that I trigger in you, we can’t have a good solid conversation and move forward. ![]() Lisa Barlow (who considers herself “Mormon 2.0”) says to Heather Gay (a self-proclaimed “good Mormon gone bad”), “I have never done anything mean to you. Let’s set the scene: The ladies of Salt Lake City, the 10th American Housewives franchise, are seated at a dinner. And it’s all because of this: □, the thumbs-up emoji, that this debate's lived rent free in our minds for weeks. But it’s the latest fracas that has permeated the Housewives ether and ignited a larger, albeit no less tacky, cultural conversation. Cast members (and the show’s editors) have turned the ability to make the most mundane fights into extraordinary, multi-episode-long events, all for loyal viewers to devour week after week. Consider Luann de Lesseps and Dorinda Medley’s fight over the designer Jovani Teresa Giudice’s feud with her sister-in-law, Melissa Gorga, about sprinkle cookies the Sonja Morgan Tipsy Girl versus Bethenny Frankel Skinnygirl battle! This roster is much better in a league or format that leans more heavily towards bash, and for coaches who have time to develop their team. I have actually come to prefer this starting lineup for Orcs, and that is coming from someone who thinks that the Troll is a dumpster fire quality player. Lineup 3: 2 Rerolls and a Troll and a Goblin This would be my preferred lineup for Legion League or TBBL which have so many elf teams in them. He another strength 3 piece, and block, sure-hands helps to protect from 1db cage dives. It's probably fair to call him the worst dedicated ball-handling piece in the entire game outside of Thro-Ras. That's not to say the Orc thrower is good. Sure-hands is also helpful if you expect to play in an environment with wood elves, skaven, or any other team that you might see cage diving. You lose the floating reroll, but gain sure-hands and pass for ball-handling duties. I have come to prefer this lineup to the 3 reroll setup. This was the other lineup people quickly glommed onto when the change to Orcs was announced. It simply doesn't perform as well, in my estimation the more a league leans towards finesse or bash style games. Overall I think that it's an unnecessary compromise that is best for immediate team expansion with new players. You are down strength compared to both 2 reroll starting lineups, especially compared to the troll lineup. ![]() Blitzers or the goblin are your ball carriers, which is fine for how bad throwers are. You give up the thrower, who has a built in rerolls for the most important ball-handling action in the game and instead get a stunty goblin. So instead of grousing about that, I thought it would be better to discuss what starting rosters player think are best under the new rule changes. The Roman Empire, which then ruled over neighbouring southern Britain, represented a very real threat of invasion to Ireland, which may have acted as a spur to the creation of the alphabet. Scholars such as Carney and MacNeill have suggested that ogham was first created as a cryptic alphabet, designed by the Irish so as not to be understood by those with a knowledge of the Latin alphabet. There are two main schools of thought among scholars as to the motivation for the creation of ogham. 170r of the Book of Ballymote (1390), the Auraicept na n-Éces explaining the ogham script Since ogham inscriptions consist almost exclusively of personal names and marks possibly indicating land ownership, linguistic information that may be glimpsed from the Primitive Irish period is mostly restricted to phonological developments. The transition to Old Irish, the language of the earliest sources in the Latin alphabet, takes place in about the 6th century. In Ireland and in Wales, the language of the monumental stone inscriptions is termed Primitive Irish. The Latin alphabet is the primary contender mainly because its influence at the required period (4th century) is most easily established, being widely used in neighbouring Roman Britannia, while runes in the 4th century were not very widespread even in continental Europe. "W", unknown to Latin writing and lost in Greek (cf. Runic origin would elegantly explain the presence of "H" and "Z" letters unused in Irish, as well as the presence of vocalic and consonantal variants "U" vs. The largest number of scholars favour the Latin alphabet as this template, although the Elder Futhark and even the Greek alphabet have their supporters. It appears that the Ogham alphabet was modelled on another script, and some even consider it a mere cipher of its template script (Düwel 1968: points out similarity with ciphers of Germanic runes). A period of writing on wood or other perishable material prior to the preserved monumental inscriptions needs to be assumed, sufficient for the loss of the phonemes represented by úath ("H") and straif ("Z" in the manuscript tradition, but probably "F" from "SW"), gétal (representing the velar nasal "NG" in the manuscript tradition, but etymologically probably "GW"), all of which are clearly part of the system, but unattested in inscriptions. Although the use of "classical" ogham in stone inscriptions seems to have flourished in the 5th and 6th centuries around the Irish Sea, from the phonological evidence it is clear that the alphabet predates the 5th century. It is generally thought that the earliest inscriptions in Ogham date to about the 4th century AD, but James Carney believed its origin is rather within the 1st century BC. ![]() 18 CE (derived from Eastern Arabic numerals and Brahmi numerals) BCEĪdlam (slight influence from Arabic) 1989 CE Caucasian Albanian (origin uncertain) c.Cherokee (syllabary letter forms only) c.Origins Carving of Ogham letters into a stone pillar – illustration by Stephen Reid (1873 – 1948), in: Myths & Legends of the Celtic Race by T.
